Swatching and Gauge for Knitters and Crocheters

Sale price$30.00

Wednesday, September 10; 6-8pm

If you knit or crochet, you've probably heard of the concept of gauge -- the number of stitches and/or rows per inch required to create a finished object that's the size intended by the designer. You've also probably experienced what happens when your gauge is off, ending up with a finished object much smaller or much bigger than you expected.

In this class, we'll explore the concept of gauge, the steps you can take to make sure your project is the size you expected, and what to do when you just can’t get gauge!

Required materials: Two swatches (see Homework) and a ruler or tape measure

Homework:

Knit or crochet two identical swatches using DK (#3) or worsted (#4) weight yarn (preferably wool or other natural fiber) and a needle or hook suitable for that yarn. Your swatches should be at least 5x5” square.

  • Knit swatches should be done in either garter stitch (knit every row) or stockinette (alternate knit and purl rows); if you swatch in stockinette, include a 3 or 4 stitch garter stitch border to keep the swatch from curling too much.
  • Crochet swatches should be done in either single crochet or half-double crochet.

Block only one of your swatches by soaking the swatch in tepid water for about 10 minutes before gently squeezing out the water. Lay the swatch on a towel and gently smooth it so the fabric lies flat, then let it dry. Do not block your second swatch.

Bring both swatches to class with you.
